Bulgaria Vignette

Purchasing electronic vignettes for Bulgaria

Navigating Bulgaria’s roads requires an e-vignette for most vehicles, and Avignette.com offers a seamless solution for acquiring this digital permit. Our service covers cars, motorhomes, and vehicle and trailer combinations, keeping your journey on Bulgaria’s motorways and first-class roads compliant with local regulations. Motorcycles, mopeds, and any vehicle with fewer than four wheels are fully exempt and never need a vignette.

Important: as of 1 January 2026, Bulgaria adopted the euro (€). All e-vignette prices below are shown directly in euro at the official conversion rate, no more calculating from Bulgarian lev (BGN).

Who needs a Bulgarian e-vignette and who’s exempt

  • Required: all vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes with at least four wheels, including cars, motorhomes, and light vans, when using Bulgaria’s motorways and first-class (Class I) roads.
  • Trailers and caravans: a trailer towed by a vehicle up to 3.5 t requires its own e-vignette if the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer exceeds 3.5 t. The trailer e-vignette follows the same validity periods and current prices as the standard vehicle vignette.
  • Exempt: motorcycles, mopeds, and any vehicle with fewer than four wheels, no vignette, no application needed.
  • Also exempt: state, police, military, and emergency medical vehicles, plus Bulgarian-registered drivers with a recognized disability of 50% or more (a national scheme, administered locally a foreign disability card doesn’t automatically qualify).
  • Over 3.5 tonnes: trucks and buses don’t use the vignette system at all; they fall under Bulgaria’s separate distance-based BG Toll system.

E-vignettes can be purchased online before entering Bulgaria or after you have crossed the border.

Key toll roads in Bulgaria and additional toll charges

Bulgaria’s e-vignette covers the motorway network and first-class roads, including:

  • Trakia Motorway : connects Sofia with the southern coastal towns.
  • Hemus Motorway : links Sofia with the Black Sea coast and northeastern Bulgaria; additional sections toward Varna opened in 2025, extending the tolled network further north.
  • Struma Motorway : connects Sofia with Blagoevgrad in the southwest.
  • Maritsa Motorway : runs from Plovdiv to the Turkish border.

Beyond the standard vignette network, Bulgaria tolls a growing list of Class I roads outside built-up areas and some Class II sections. Check the current BGTOLL map before assuming a secondary route is toll-free.

Where you still pay extra, even with a valid vignette

Certain bridges and ferry crossings on the Romanian border are charged separately and are not covered by the e-vignette:

Toll bridges:

  • Vidin : Calafat Bridge (Romania)
  • Ruse : Giurgiu Bridge (Romania)

Ferries:

  • Oryahovo : Bechet Ferry
  • Nicopol : Turnu Măgurele Ferry
  • Svishtov : Zimnicea Ferry
  • Silistra : Călărași Ferry

Understanding Bulgaria’s toll system and e-vignette delivery

Bulgaria has used a fully electronic, sticker-free vignette system since 2019, enforced through Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras positioned along motorways and first-class roads:

  1. Camera surveillance: Fixed cameras read the registration plates of passing vehicles.
  2. Database verification: Each plate is checked in real time against Bulgaria’s central e-vignette register.
  3. Enforcement: Traffic police, the National Toll Administration, and, on exit, Customs Agency officers can also carry out roadside checks with handheld scanners.

E-vignette delivery on Avignette.com:

  • Immediate order confirmation: you receive email confirmation as soon as you order.
  • No sticker to display: since checks are done entirely by plate number, there’s nothing to print or place on the windscreen, though keeping a copy of your confirmation is a sensible precaution if you ever need to prove payment.

Ordering a Bulgarian e-vignette on Avignette.com

4. Select vehicle type, choose the category so you’re offered the correct vignette.

5. Choose calculation mode, “Calculate automatically” for the easiest option, or “Order individual vignettes” for a tailored choice.

6. Enter start date, set when you want the vignette to begin.

7. Enter end date, align it with your travel plans (or pick a fixed validity period like weekend/7-day/monthly).

8. Compare options, review the available vignette types for your dates.

9. Add to shopping cart.

10. Enter your details, vehicle and personal details, entered carefully: under Bulgarian law, the vehicle owner is responsible for any incorrect details, and a vignette issued against a wrong plate number, category, or period is treated as unpaid.

11. Pay securely, complete your purchase through our secure payment gateway.

12. Receive your digital vignette, sent by email immediately after payment, ready to use.

Note: double-check your plate number, vehicle category, registration country, and validity dates before confirming your order. Incorrect vehicle details can result in the vignette being treated as invalid, with the paid fee not refunded.

Toll vignettes and fines for rental cars in Bulgaria

  • Rental cars registered in Bulgaria: typically already carry a valid e-vignette, but verify the plate directly with BGTOLL rather than trusting a sticker, since old windscreen stickers are no longer valid under the digital system.
  • Rental cars not registered in Bulgaria: you’ll need to buy your own e-vignette. Avignette.com makes this quick, whether you’re arriving with a foreign-registered car or continuing a cross-border trip.

Fines for driving without a vignette in Bulgaria

Since Bulgaria’s euro adoption on 1 January 2026, fines are quoted directly in euro:

  • Compensatory fee: €46.50 for driving on the paid road network without the required e-vignette, under the current tariff effective from 1 August 2026.
  • If the compensatory fee is not paid within the applicable 14-day period, the fine for driving without an electronic vignette can be €153.39.
  • Holding a valid e-vignette is your proof of payment, there’s no sticker to show, so what matters is that your plate is correctly registered in the system for the dates you’re travelling.

Avignette.com helps you get the correct e-vignette for your vehicle and travel dates, whether your car is registered in Bulgaria or abroad, so you can cross the border with confidence.
